Honestly, I'm not sure who pisses me off more- Terry Jones, the grandstanding Koran-burning douchbag who values his ego over the lives of Americans (and others) stationed in the middle east (Because, yes. He knew damn well what would happen), or the fundamentalist wastes of oxygen who decided to kill people who had nothing to do with the stunt. As far as I'm concerned, they should all be rounded up and shot.

And people wonder why I think humanity would be better off without religion.

*Adds Gov. Chris Gregoire to the list of "Democrats who need to get kneecapped"*

So...Washington State is in a bit of a budget crisis due to the recession. The solution? Cut any state program that gives people a real shot at pulling themselves out of the hole the economy has put them in. Tax the rich? Nah. Tax soda and candy? OMG!!! Families are suffering!!! Leave poor people to starve, eliminate state health-care programs, and cut the education system down at the roots? Yeah. That's the ticket.

Not only is this fucked up from a moral perspective, it's also bloody stupid. A sick, uneducated populace trying to survive on the margins does not make for a strong economy. It does, however, keep the vultures, the self-indulgent, and the just plain ignorant comfortable for a bit longer. Thank god we've got our priorities straight. /sarcasm

Awesome comment on one of the articles, though.

And the perfect season for it too!

"...Are there no work houses?" "If the poor insist on becoming ill, let them die and be done with it. That will decrease the surplus population."

The ignorant have spoken. Better a dollar in their pocket than a teacher in a classroom. -Source

Barack Obama does not deserve a second term as president. As far as I'm concerned, that's no longer up for debate. He doesn't even deserve a second chance to run, and if the DNC doesn't want to lose everything next election, they'll nominate someone else.

Now, I know what you're thinking- "Well, you can't expect Obama to fix all the damage done by eight years of Bush in just two years." and I agree with this. I've said it before. Loudly.

So let me explain where I'm coming from. If Obama had said "Look. I understand why you are upset. I've made mistakes, I'm not perfect, but I'm trying," I'd have sympathy. I'm not mad because Obama didn't carry out all of his campaign promises. I'm furious that he didn't even try. And I'm even more furious with the blatant contempt that this man has for his base. When the people who fund-raised/campaigned/voted for him ask "Hey? What's up with this?" he responds by treating us like ungrateful children. When someone tells you that your base has vanished due to your actions, the proper response, Sir, is NOT (and I quote) "Well, they must not have read the details." It's not that I think compromise is OMG EVIL!!! It can, in fact, be a vital tool in politics. But compromise only works if both sides give up something. In the fight over Health Care, Obama took the public option (That he fucking campaigned on) off the table at the start. And gave the insurance companies a captive customer pool with the mandate. And the Republicans still voted against it. That's not a compromise. That's a sign that you need to utterly ignore these people and actually get shit done.

And it's not that he caved on Health care. It's that he caved on that, and accountability for war crimes, and closing Gitmo, and financial reform, and the tax cut extension, and dozens of other things. I'd say he caved on gay rights, but I'm pretty sure he never intended to support that to begin with. (That's a whole other rant in and of itself. Fierce advocate, my ass.) And then acted like a pissy teenager when people complained. "You don't understand what I'm going through." "No one appreciates me!" And so-forth and so-on. Yes. Obama has done some good. So he isn't John McCain. Great. Give the man a fucking cookie. He isn't a complete waste of oxygen. But that doesn't come close to excusing what he hasn't done. More to the point, it doesn't excuse what he has done. (Defending DOMA- in incredibly homophobic terms, defending DADT when a judge in Riverside issued an injunction against it, okaying Predator drone strikes (an estimated one-third of those killed have been civilians), okaying the assassination of a US citizen...yeah.)

And after all of that he has the audacity to attack his own supporters for protesting? The man finally shows some backbone, and goes after- not his political opponents, not the people who have made it their sole mission to bring him down, but his own base? And we're supposed to accept this, because he isn't as bad as Bush or McCain? Fuck that shit.

"First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."

Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection." - Martin Luther King, Jr. 16 April, 1963

American voters are, by and large, complete fucking idiots. Seriously, does this country have the collective memory of a fucking goldfish? WTF, people.

I'm still not sure what to say about this.

I can only hope that justice is done. (Well, okay, I can also hope that every "pro-lifer" in the country is struck dead, but let's keep things realistic.)

The California Supreme Court is comprised of bigoted, spineless, dickless cowards.

They upheld Prop 8. They upheld stripping rights from a minority solely based on popular vote. Because, as we all know, civil rights are entirely dependent on the will of the majority. If people want equal protection, well then they damn well better get popular support. Because the courts are not there to protect us.

Fuck California. Fuck the voters. Fuck the politicians. Fuck the court. Fuck every single bigoted piece of shit that had anything to do with passing and upholding Prop8. I hope you all die horribly.

Observation of the day- nothing kills the buzz of a historic presidential election like the residents of your home state deciding that you're a second-class citizen. And putting it into the fucking constitution.

Why? Honestly, I don't get it. I really don't. Why are we so threatening? Why do they hate us so much? Why is it so terrible that people might see us as human?

I'm swinging between sadness and anger. The anger especially because this passed with such a high Democrat turnout. All these bright happy Obama voters, so thrilled to talk about "change" and about how wonderful it was that we could elect a black man, and "Yes We Can"- so long as "we" are straight. Goddammit. I expected this from places like Arkansas and Florida. But coming from such a solidly blue state- well, it hurts.

I can't even imagine what this is like for the couples in the state who have just seen their marriages ruled null and void by the will of the people. The attorney general is saying the marriages already performed won't be invalidated, but lets just say that I'm not so optimistic. The people behind this won't be satisfied with a partial victory. They've already shown that. There is no limit to their depravity, no tactic too low, no lie they will not tell. They don't care about families or children. They care about making sure that we know what our place is. And apparently California agrees with them.

Words cannot express how thrilled I am about Obama's victory. I'll probably get teary once it fully sinks in.

In other news, it looks like prop 8 is gonna pass. If it does, California voters can officially go fuck themselves. *grumble*Stupid, closeted bigots*grumble*. I'll wait until the official results are in before going off on a full blown rant. Who knows, we might get lucky.
